Echoes of the Past: Cloudland Station’s First Stone Cottage

Situated at the heart of Cloudland Station, the Folk Victorian Cottage is a beacon of the community’s rich history and architectural charm. This stone cottage, the first home built in the community, welcomes visitors as they cross the covered bridge and enter Mill Creek Circle.

The cottage’s prime location along the creek offers a picturesque view of Wishing Bridge Pond from its front porch. This tranquil spot is the favorite morning retreat of the owner, Angie Tatum, where she enjoys her daily cup of coffee.

The design of the cottage is a harmonious blend of English country and Victorian aesthetics. Its high-pitched slate roof and symmetrical form are quintessentially English, while the porch is adorned with intricate Victorian details. The dual chimneys add a touch of elegance and functionality to the stone structure.

The Folk Victorian Cottage tells the tale of early European settlers in the 1800s, borrowing architectural elements from their homeland while incorporating new embellishments found in their new world. The functional front porch, a common feature in the rural South, is one such adaptation.

Inside, the cottage boasts a handsome timber-framed structure with large exposed beams. Owners John and Angie have chosen to leave many of the pegs visible, lending a casual charm to the interior. Among their favorite interior details is the large stone arch over the kitchen stove, a unique and functional design element.

The combination of stone, slate, and timber framing sets a high standard of craftsmanship and beauty, paving the way for the custom homes that followed in the community. The Folk Victorian Cottage, therefore, is not just a home but a cornerstone of Cloudland Station’s architectural legacy.
